EIN verification
Check whether a business’s English name matches its EIN.
Why do multiple business names show a match for the same EIN?
The IRS matches based on a “name control” — usually the first four characters of the business name. So similar names like “Maple Works” and “Maple Grove” may both return a valid match for the same EIN if they share the same first four letters.
This is the standard matching method based on IRS name control rules. STATE.REPORT uses this method for EIN verification.

- Use the English business name exactly as shown on the CP575 notice, not a storefront name or an unregistered abbreviation.
- If you recently applied for an EIN, the record may not yet be available for verification. Consider waiting about two weeks after receiving the number before checking it.
- A match does not establish standing, creditworthiness, operating status or authority.
